What to Expect on the RBLP Oral Exam (and How to Prepare)

Most certification exams are multiple choice. RBLP® exams aren't. Every level of the RBLP series is an oral exam, conducted online by a certified examiner. That surprises a lot of candidates, so here's what to expect.

The format

What examiners are looking for

The exam tests three kinds of knowledge in each competency domain:

  1. Factual (what): Can you explain the leader tasks?

  2. Conceptual (why): Do you understand why they build resilient teams?

  3. Procedural (how): Can you describe how you have done them, with real examples?

That last part is where experienced leaders often under-prepare. Knowing the material isn't enough. You need clear, specific stories from your own leadership, told in a structured way.

How to prepare

  • Complete every prep module and reflection question. The prep course is built around the same leader tasks the exam covers.

  • Build a story bank. For each leader task, write down one or two real examples: the situation, what you did, and the result.

  • Rehearse out loud. An oral exam is a speaking skill. Practice explaining each task in plain language, without jargon or acronyms the examiner may not know.

  • Do a mock exam. Rehearsing with an instructor who knows the format is the single best way to find your weak spots before exam day.

  • Check your setup. Test your camera, microphone, and connection ahead of time, and pick a quiet space.
